"It’s remarkable how much longer customers stay in the store when the music is right”

At Decathlon in Lier, you can hear Tunify playing through the speakers. According to Store Leader Wim, this has a remarkable effect on the way his customers behave.

"Since 2018, sports enthusiasts have been able to shop to their heart's content in our store. With a wide range of clothing and sports equipment for more than 35 activities, there is something here for everyone”, says Wim Vermant, Store Leader at the Decathlon branch in Lier. Recently, the store started using Tunify.


Music at the request of the team

"One day, the team asked me if we could have music in-store", Wim explains. "I saw no issue with that, as I can imagine that it's more fun to work with music. And I was also curious to see what the effect would be on our customers. Personally, I like hearing some tunes in the shops. So, we decided to give Tunify a try."

Wim opted for Tunify Simple. "That's the subscription where you can select music agendas based on the type of business you have. Tunify automatically selects songs that fit your company and the time of day," says Wim. "The music agenda that we have currently selected is Trendy Shopping. The selection changes automatically: sometimes it's more seventies; other times it's more dance. I find it very pleasant to listen to. I haven't tried any other music agendas yet, because I'm perfectly satisfied with this one."

Love that it's easy to use

Wim uses Tunify on a Chromebook ­– a type of tablet. "In the mornings we log in, fire up Tunify and that's it", according to Wim. "And in the evenings we can just switch it off. So it doesn't require any special training or anything. I love that it's easy to use and that the music is always different."


Customers stay in the store longer

"We haven't been using Tunify for very long, but I'm already noticing the positive effects", Wim continues. "Customers are staying longer in the store and they're clearly enjoying the music. We're also more often having to ask visitors to complete their purchases. On days when I'm working in the store, I sometimes find myself thinking 'Wow, are they still here?' when I run into the same customers again after an hour. Normally you can tell by the decreasing number of visitors that closing time is approaching, but that's no longer the case. I also love it when I notice customers humming or snapping their fingers to the beat of the music. That's proof that they're enjoying their shopping experience with us."
